Weir Eyes Winning Corner Again

Darren Weir’s stellar run looks set to continue at Sandown Hillside today with Red Corner in the Le Pine Funerals Handicap (1300m).

The four-year-old son of Haradasun has been in excellent form this campaign, winning two of three this campaign and improving with each run.

He resumed with a comfortably win at Ararat over 1200m running to a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 80.

The then got a bit too far back at this track and trip four weeks ago running on well into third producing a figure of 84.

Then three weeks ago at the Lakeside track in similar he settled midfield and broke clear when it counted for another easy win, netting a weight-adjusted figure of 88.

He carries just half a kilogram more today with the apprentice Harry Coffey engaged and profiles superbly for this in a race he shouldn’t find any tougher.

He’s drawn inside and should take up his customary spot in midfield.

Coffey only needs to find some clear air in the straight and Weir’s golden recent run should continue.

The resuming Winta Chiller might well be the biggest danger to Weir’s charge.

The Ross Pecora-trained Artie Schiller mare is a super consistent galloper who was racing well in tougher than this last campaign, culminating in a win at Caulfield over 1440m.

If anything this may be a fraction short for her, although she is certainly capable of flashing home late on from the back, and she has placed in all three of her first-up showings.

The 58kg is a concern but she’s consistently produces figures in the past that are good enough to win this, and must be kept safe.

Greg Eurell’s Elwick Jack looks next in line here dropping back from the Group 3 Victoria Handicap (1400m) where he only beat one home at Caulfield.

He did a bit wrong on that occasion and his form prior was a lot better, including a narrow win at this track and trip four weeks back where he produced a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 88.

He beat home Red Corner on that occasion but does meet him 2kg worse off for this.

The 60kg will also test him out today but he rates well and certainly shouldn’t be ignored.
