The ultra-consistent Mr Corone should have no trouble adding to his impressive career record in the Riverina Plaster Works Benchmark 65 Handicap (1400m) at Wagga this afternoon.
Brett Cavanough’s four-year-old has won three of eight career starts and placed in his other five, running some handy Timeform figures in the process.
He resumed with a win at Parkes, with a weight-adjusted Timeform figure of 83.
That number puts him clear of the rest of these on last-start ratings.
He’s also one win and one minor placing on rain-affected tracks, so the wet weather that’s been around lately shouldn’t be an issue.
Timeform takes a look at each horse’s chances in the race.
1. Micalong – Has been well below his best for a long time now and hasn't won in more than a year. Hard to make a case for here on poor recent form.
2. Sonro – SCRATCHED3. Soward – Recent form in easier company has been good and he comes into this off a win at Leeton last start. Will find this a tougher task and prefer for the place.
4. The Boondock Saint – Six-year-old gelding who drops in trip since latest outing at Albury when sixth, finishing 3.1 lengths off the winner. Not far away two back and has some claims here.5. All Conquering – Beaten a long way when resuming at Canberra on the Acton track last start. Needs to do much better than that.
6. Seriously Good – SCRATCHED7. Roman Alliance – Has not been far away in recent times finishing third at Dubbo two runs back which was followed by a fourth last start. Goes up 120m in distance and must be considered.
8. Mosso Arioso – Back to back duck eggs is poor form and looks unlikely to play a role in this.9. Mr Corone – Resumed in good order with a win last start and won his only race last campaign. Likely to push forward from barrier 8 and will be in this for a long way. Hard to go past.
10. Kleiner Teufel – Favourite and led before knocking right up to run 10th at Wagga on May 25. Up in class and looks tested again.11. Marwishuponastar – Proved far too strong when winning at Young on May 18. Drawn wide in barrier 16 but is not without hope here.
12. Baa Ram Ewe – Latest form mixed. Drawn the rails but hard to make a strong case for her after only beating the one runner home last start.13. Memphis Flash – Five-year-old mare who drops in journey since last start at Queanbeyan when fifth, finishing 2.1 lengths off the winner. One for the multiples.
14. Lorrie’s Gift – SCRATCHED15. Mrs Menzies – Form has been only moderate in recent times and can't enthuse until she improves.
16. Distinctly Sports – Fourth in much easier company last start and looks unlikely to challenge against these.17. Chiselled – SCRATCHED
Summary: Mr Corone looks well placed here on the back of a last start win when resuming. Won his only race last campaign and will go forward and prove very hard to run down in this. Seriously Good has been in good form of late, winning just two runs back and placing on either side. Should be in the mix. Sonro also must be respected.
