Miss Godden Plots Another Winning Chapter

Darren Weir’s super-consistent mare Miss Godden can continue her dream recent run today in the Tradies Day At Ballarat 1/3 Restricted 68 Handicap (2300m).

In eight starts this campaign the five-year-old daughter of Half Hennessy has never missed the top three, saluting the judge three times already and placing on every other occasion.

Eleven days ago she stepped up to the 2300m for the first time and produced a game second to Danzoya where she sat on the speed the entire trip and refused to relent in the straight.

That run followed a comprehensive win two starts back at Werribee over 2230m in similar grade.

Prior to that she proved far too good at Warrnambool in Restricted 62 grade after running second in a hot race at Werribee before Christmas. Four winners have come out of that contest.

Regular partner Dean Yendall goes back on board today which looks a positive, and he should be able to kick this mare forward from gate five in a pretty small field.

Miss Godden carries the same 58kg she lugged last week and rates as the one to beat today.

If she’s on top of her game, it’s hard to imagine anything will beat her.

Jungle Fighter shapes as the main danger on his home track.

He ran third at this track and trip last start, finishing 1.4L off the winner and beaten just a nose by Miss Godden.

The pair meet each other at level weights again and trainer Dan O’Sullivan has whisked the blinkers off for the first time today at start number 30.

He can provide plenty of cheek but the he’s found his level now as a racehorse while Miss Godden still looks to be on her way through the grades. That gives Weir’s mare a handy advantage here.

Elms comes through a different passage to the top two having raced at Moonee Valley 13 days ago over 2040m.

He could only manage ninth on that occasion but he should find this one easier, and being by Zabeel the trip shouldn’t be an issue.

The six-year-old is a past winner at this track but he carries an extra kilogram than the top two and might just be found out late on.
