Gibbs-White always destined to be England player- Nuno

Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo believes Morgan Gibbs-White can justify his “dream” England call-up.

Gibbs-White was this week named in England interim manager Lee Carsley's first squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against the Republic of Ireland and Finland.

The 24-year-old midfielder won the Under-17s World Cup with England in 2017 and the Under-21s European Championships – when Carsley was in charge – in 2023 and Nuno feels he is ready for the senior set-up.

Nuno, whose side extended their unbeaten Premier League start on Saturday after being held 1-1 at home against Wolves, said of Gibbs-White's inclusion: "It was a dream for him.

"It is something he has really worked hard for. He has achieved it and it is well deserved.

"He is enjoying his football and is playing good. Now we wish him all the best."

Nuno said Gibbs-White, the first Forest player to be named in a full England squad since Stuart Pearce in 1997, always had the potential to be a senior international.

Nuno added: "I think so, especially with his trajectory through the age groups. He is a world champion and there was a lot of quality in that generation. I just hope he continues.

"For Forest, it is a moment of being proud because it is a long time since the club had a player in the England squad. We have one now, we wish him all the best and hope he returns healthy."

Gibbs-White went close to celebrating his call-up on Saturday with a goal but his curling free-kick – after Jean-Ricner Bellegarde's fine strike had cancelled out Chris Wood's opener for Forest – was superbly saved by Wolves debutant Sam Johnstone.

Johnstone was thrown straight into action by Wolves boss Gary O'Neil after his £10million deadline-day move from Crystal Palace.

O'Neill said of the England goalkeeper: "He did well. He looked assured, his use of the ball was good, so it was a good day.

"He's obviously not played much recently and only had a couple of days with us, so it was a good start to his Wolves career."

Johnstone will battle it out with Portugal's Jose Sa for Wolves' number one jersey and O'Neil added: "I felt that Sam should have the shirt today, but it doesn't mean it's always going to be that way.

"Jose is a fantastic goalkeeper. He's done an awful lot while I've been here, before I was here, so Jose will react in the right way and he'll know he needs to fight for his place like everyone else does in the squad."
