Babar is rated as the world number one in ODI cricket but has been going through a rough spell against the red ball.

The 29-year-old last scored a Test century in December 2022 and has a top score of just 41 in 18 subsequent innings.

ESPNCricinfo suggests he has now been removed from the squad following scores of 30 and five in England's innings victory in their series opener at Multan.

The Pakistan Cricket Board recently appointed five new names to its selection panel, including former ICC umpire Aleem Dar.

Pakistan are also due to replace spinner Abrar Ahmed, who remains sick in hospital after being struck down by fever during the first Test. Veteran Noman Ali, 38, and Sajid Khan are in contention.

Shaheen Shah Afridi, the side's leading pace bowler, was present at training on Sunday but could be rested as he continues to manage his return from knee trouble.
