Crystal Palace boss makes bold trophy claim

Oliver Glasner insists Crystal Palace intend to fight for silverware this season no matter how their transfer window pans out.

Glasner has bid far more farewells than he has issued welcomes to Selhurst Park ahead of Friday's deadline, by which time he hopes to have at least a couple of new reinforcements in his ranks.

The Austrian, who turned 50 on Wednesday, nevertheless remains steadfast in his ambitions for Palace, who booked their place in the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 4-0 victory over Norwich.

He said: "You always go into a cup competition to win it as I think everything else makes no sense for every single team, because it's always do or die.

"I think nobody can say, or we don't say, the next game, 'it's fine when we lose it'. No. This is why I like it, these games.

"And of course we play the Carabao Cup for winning it, we will play the FA Cup for winning it.

"We also play the Premier League for winning it, but after two defeats maybe it's far away."

All three of Palace's goal-scorers opened their competitive campaign accounts on Tuesday at Selhurst Park.

Summer signing Daichi Kamada netted the second-minute opener before picking up an assist for one of two for Jean-Philippe Mateta after the break.

Eberechi Eze set up the Frenchman's second before adding one of his own six minutes from time, assisted by fellow Euro 2024 England squad member Adam Wharton.

Glasner hailed the result as a "very, very important" win after two consecutive losses to start their Premier League campaign.

Earlier in the week, the Palace boss revealed goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had requested to leave the south London club, and could be on his way to Wolves, according to reports.

Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah has been strongly linked with Palace, while reports suggest Wolfsburg defender Maxence Lacroix may also soon reunite with his former Bundesliga boss in London.

The future of captain and Newcastle target Marc Guehi also remains uncertain with just two days left in the window.

Norwich boss Johannes Hoff Thorup is also hoping to introduce some new additions before the window shuts.

He said: "I think we have to, just to make the competition around the starting 11 as hard as possible and as tough as possible.

"That's our ambition in this window, but we're looking for players where they need to be able to come in and perform and also create that competition.

"That's always difficult to find, but we're looking."
