Laytown a perfect wrap

The Laytown races on the beach were held on the Monday after Champions' Weekend

For this year's edition on the famous beach (the only race on a beach under rules in Ireland and the UK) there was a large and enthusiastic crowd who enjoyed the perfect beach weather and seeing all races run before the tide called a halt to proceedings.

While not having the quality of thoroughbreds that were to be seen over the weekend at Leopardstown and the Curragh, the meeting obviously was high on the bucket list of the 45 Welsh Farmers who were en route to the Natiional Ploughing Championships that were to be held in a different part of Ireland and decided to detour via Laytown.

The meeting has been held for over 150 years and has included many famous names among its officials and many hilarious stories of the actual races.

The fact that the date of the meeting (which depends a lot on tides etc.) was on the Monday of Champions' weekend made it a perfect ending for the many who continued on to Laytown after the other races.
