SATURDAY POST MORTEM – June 17

Chris Scholtz reviews racing around Australia on June 17.

THE STARS

BJORN BAKER: A winning treble at Rosehill for one of the best strike rate stables in Sydney, with Jason Collett doing his part by riding two of the winners. Landmark for Baker as it was his first treble at a city meeting.

MATT DUNN: He may be listed as a country trainer but holds his own witbn the best in Brisbane and Sydney. Bet he wishes there was a Highway race at every Sydney meeting after the promising Zamex made it 10 wins for Dunn in these races restricted to country-trained horses.

SCOTT BRUNTON/DAVID PIRES: Top Tasmanian duo land another Melbourne win at Moonee Valley with the talented Lord Da Vinci. These Tasmanians are making a habit of showing up the Melbourne form when they hit town.

BRANDON STOCKDALE: Promising apprentice lands a double at Moonee Valley including a winner trained by his father, the former rider Frankie Stockdale. Certain to make his mark with his claim during the winter months.

DARREN BEADMAN: His tenure at the top at Godolphin is coming to an end but surely his success has whetted his appetite to be a trainer in his own right. Another pleasing day with three wins at Rosehill and Ipswich including the quinella in the Gai Waterhouse Classic.

TIFFANI BROOKER: Apprentice won only her second black-type race on Monsieur Gustave in the Eye Liner Stakes after picking up the ride on race morning.

THEY SAID IT!

"I rode for Gai for years and to win a race in her honour was a great thrill." - Darren Beadman after Maternal’s win in the Gai Waterhouse Classic.

“It's exciting to get a treble. It's my first on any metropolitan track, not just a Saturday.” – Bjorn Baker celebrates his big day at Rosehill.

“He's a terrific galloper, I've got nothing but respect for the horse. We’re always trying to patch up something. He's got issues but the beach life certainly suits him.” – Scott Brunton’s summation of Lord Da Vinci.

"I had to go to plan D. I was banking on his turn of foot at the end. It was his first time at 2000 metres and he's done a great job." – Rachel King sums up her winning ride on Supply And Demand at Rosehill.

“That's why you put these good jockeys on because they make the right decisions.” Clinton McDonald praises Mark Zahra for his win on Revolving Door at Moonee Valley.

"He's a master at giving them a little freshen-up and then bringing them back and getting another good run out of them." – Hugh Bowman on Chris Waller’s training skills after his win on Liapari.

“I'm just rapt to ride a winner in town for my old man. It's his first winner in town and mum owns this one so it's really good." – Brandon Stockdale sparks family celebrations with his win on Unique Lovely at Moonee Valley.

SIN BIN

BEAU MERTENS: Felt the wrath of stewards and almost wore a charge for an incompetent ride on the favourite Leonoro in the last at Moonee Valley. Stewards were less than impressed with his tactics and error of judgement that left the horse badly held up for clear running. A one out of 10 ride from the boom apprentice.

RACHEL KING: Copped a reprimand for setting unsustainable fast pace on ARBEITSAM at Rosehill.

BRENTON AVDULLA: He may be leading the Sydney premiership but he won’t look back on his ride on PAKAYA PRINCE at Rosehill as one of his memorable efforts. Admitted to stewards he erred sitting three deep outside the lead, setting the Victorian a huge task.

BLACKBOOK

HUALALAI: Gave up too much start. Good type for the winter.

OBSIDIAN: Nice return. Best suited up to 2000m.

PAKAYA PRINCE: Set a task covering ground. Worth following.

KILLARNEY KID: Crying out for 2o00m and a big track.

ACATOUR: Luckless in the Eye Liner. Wants 1400m at least.
