Preview 1000 Guineas, Sunday, Newmarket

Timeform go through the 18 runners for the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on Sunday, where Maybe is favourite for the first fillies' classic of the season...

Alla Speranza made winning debut at Cork (8.5f, soft) last autumn and followed that with close second in 9f Leopardstown listed race. Smart prospect, but stoutly bred and likely to need further ideally.

Diala bumped into subsequent Group 1 winner on debut and confirmed herself a smart prospect with striking performance over 7f here in October. Massive improvement needed now, however.

Discourse won maiden (short-headed Gamilati) and Sweet Solera Stakes (beat Lily's Angel 4½ lengths) last year, impressive in latter. Leading contender despite Dettori seemingly preferring Lyric of Light.

Gray Pearl justified support to win at Newbury on debut and then improved when a front-running third in the Rockfel Stakes over 7f here in October, though this is a lot tougher.

Homecoming Queen got better with racing last season, winning Fairyhouse nursery/Curragh listed event. Disappointing on reappearance but back to best to land Leopardstown Group 3 latest. Looks stable second string.

La Collina built on debut win when neck second to Maybe in Group 3 at Leopardstown, and sprung surprise when landing Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. Third to Maybe final start last year, and looks held by that rival.

Laugh Out Loud has been highly progressive on AW since making her debut in January, winning twice over 1m at Kempton. Has to take another marked step up on turf debut.

Lightening Pearl really got going in early-autumn last year, winning Curragh Group 3 by 5 lengths and following up in sub-standard Cheveley Park over 6f here in September. Likely to stay 1m.

Lily's Angel displayed a likeable attitude last season, winning 4 times. Solid reappearance third in Nell Gwyn (7f) here last month, but likely to find this too competitive.

Lyric of Light won on debut on July Course here and only 2 weeks later landed May Hill at Doncaster. Further improvement to win Group 1 Fillies' Mile over C&D final start last year, and the choice of Dettori.

Mashoora was runner-up twice at Group 3 level in France last year but made amends with easy success at same level at Maisons-Laffitte in early-April. Arrives here with a progressive profile and considered.

Maybe made big strides last summer, unbeaten in five starts and signing off with ready success in Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh. Will stay 1m and leading chance of making it 6 out of 6.

Moonstone Magic was unraced at 2 yrs but has quickly propelled herself into the big time with wins in maiden at Leicester and Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury. Should get 1m and ease in the ground in her favour.

Nayarra had been knocking on the door in good company before breaking her duck in style when taking Italian Group 1 on final start last season. Close second under penalty in Nell Gywn, but more needed.

Radio Gaga won a 6f maiden at Haydock on debut and better form when placed in nursery and listed race on subsequent starts. Second to Moonstone Magic in Fred Darling last month, but held on that form.

Starscope made winning debut here in October and shaped arguably best off all when fourth in Nell Gwyn Stakes last time, looking as though 1m will suit. Vibes are that her stable prefers The Fugue, though.

Sunday Times readily landed odds in 6f maiden in August, and greatly improved when runner-up in Cheveley Park. Better than bare form of sixth in Nell Gywn on return, but further step up in trip a negative.

The Fugue created a huge impression when winning a maiden here in October, impressing with how she travelled and pulling clear with well-bred Godolphin filly. Bred to stay further, but interesting outsider.

Timeform Verdict:

1. Maybe

2. Mashoora

3. Discourse

Timeform View: Maybe displayed both a lot of ability and a good attitude when unbeaten in 5 runs last year, and she looks an ideal Guineas type, with the mile likely to be within her compass. French-raider Mashoora is unexposed and may prove next best, while it shouldn't be assumed that Dettori riding Lyric of Light necessarily means she has the beating of Discourse. Moonstone Magic is another to consider.
