Thump Trumps Them In Silver Shadow

Thump has broken maiden status at Warwick Farm on Saturday courtesy of a determined Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes victory over race favourite Sweet Idea.

The John Thompson-trained galloper was resuming off a two-year-old season where she was twice stakes-placed.

Despite a sharp trial win at Randwick five days earlier and sitting on the limit weight, the filly was still considered a rough hope behind the likes of Sweet Idea, Twilight Royale and Montsegur.

Rider Jim Cassidy made his intentions clear from the outset, bouncing to the front and keeping favourite Sweet Idea posted wide.

Those pair remained close throughout and a stride for stride battle ensued down the straight.

After a kinder run in transit and a 2.5kg weight advantage, Thump was able to hold off a gallant Sweet Idea while Montsegur rattled home well for third.

It is the third straight year trainer John Thompson has trained the Silver Shadow winner with Thump following in the footsteps of Pane In The Glass and Nechita.

“She trialled very good on Monday,” Thompson said.

“The young girl that rides her is a good judge and she said if you're ever going to have a go at one [Group race], have a go at this.

“She has always had that little bit of ability, she goes good fresh in her campaigns.”

Cassidy stayed aboard Thump in the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) having partnered her during that Randwick trial on Monday.

“It was a good tough effort,” Cassidy said.

“She has beaten some nice quality fillies today. She has always shown ability and it was a nice trial the other day.

“John [Thompson] and Nathan [Tinkler] elected to come here instead of a midweek so it was a good decision.”

Sadly, Sweet Idea was found to have bled from both nostrils and has incurred a three month ban from racing.
