Rock Magic wins 2017 D’Orsogna-Roma Cup Group 3 $150,000 at Ascot (WA), 1200m.
Rock Magic, who was having his third run this preparation, scored a good win, his sixth stakes success and his third at Group Level. He was settled in tenth place, and made a wide move from the 600m, hitting the front at the 100m and then went on to score quite impressively.
Military Reign raced outside the leader, got the better of that runner at the 100m and she then fought on gamely for a good second.
Durendal was a handy fourth before moving up nicely nearing the home turn. He challenged at the 200m and then battled on well for third.
Pounamu ran on well for a good first up fourth while the favourite, three-year-old filly Caipirinha showed good pace from her wide barrier (13) to lead, grabbed a break on straightening and only tired from the 100m to finish (2.3 lengths) sixth after running a bold race.
