Santa Ana Lane wins 2016 Zeditave Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Caulfield (VIC) 3yoColts & Geldings, 1200m.
In a close three-way finish, Santa Ana Lane scored a promising first-up win. Having his first run since October, he was smartly away before settling nicely in fourth place, between runners. He got a split at the 200m, challenged at the 50m and finished well to grab a last-stride win.
Brockhoff raced back in sixth place, tracked up (wide with cover) at the 600m, put in a run from the 300m and wound-up late in the sprint home, running on to just miss in a photo for second.
Favourite Bassett began quickly from barrier eight and settled well outside the leader (Tuscany Hero). He went to the front at the 200m and looked the winner when clear at the 100m but was caught on the post for a close-up third.
Odyssey Moon was caught three wide without cover in fifth place. He moved up (still deep) at the home turn and fought on very well after a difficult trip for a particularly good fourth, beaten just under a half-length, resuming for new trainer Robert Smerdon. Puritan was back last place in the 11-horse field and ran on well late for (1.9 lengths) fifth, putting up a good effort.
