Excess Knowledge wins 2015 Lexus Stakes Group 3 $300,000 at Flemington (VIC), 2500m.
Excess Knowledge settled worse than midfield in the short run to the post with a round to go. Three wide turning into the long back straight he lobbed along giving the leader (Bohemian Lily) ten lengths. As they started on the big bend he was still three wide but travelling well, gradually getting into the race. Approaching the home turn he moved another width out and had some cover, ready to pounce. Into the straight he was much handier and challenged strongly at the 300m, took a narrow lead at the 200m then edged clear only to have to withstand a dour finish by Zanteca on his inner but held on in a head-bobber at the line.
Zanteca had a nice run on the rails down the back and found room to move off the rails before they straightened. Past the 200m she switched back to the inside and made a spirited run along the rails, just failing to get up before hitting the line.
Havana Cooler raced on the rails around the corner but found some space one out just before the field straightened. He got going at the 200m but flew the last 50m to nose out Elhaame and Hawkspur a stride from the post.
