The Bowler wins 2015 R A Lee Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Morphettville (SA) 3yo+, 1600m.
Well supported favourite The Bowler was smartly away from barrier four and settled nicely in fifth place, one off the rails. He was held up, between runners, nearing the home turn but got a split on turning for home and challenged at the 100m. He then lifted in the last few strides to score by a short half head.
Excites Zelady was back in ninth place, fanned deep rounding the home turn and put in a strong run to challenge at the 100m. He then fought gamely, failing by the barest of margins for second.
Metaphorical had a good trip from barrier two, racing in third place on the rails. She challenged at the 100m and battled well for a close-up third.
Dual Group One winning German-bred import Our Ivanhowe did now show any early pace and settled in last place in the 12-horse field. He improved (wide out) nearing the home turn and kept battling on quite well with his top weight (60kg) to finish (3 lengths) seventh at his first Australian start. He should be improved by the experience and will appreciate much longer.
