Kermadec wins 2014 Carbine Club Stakes Group 3 $200,000 at Flemington (VIC) 3yo, 1600m.
Kermadec began well and settled nicely in third place, one off the rails, following a very moderate early tempo (1st 1000m 62.51). Blake Shinn rode patiently as other runners moved up nearing the turn before easing into clear running at the 300m. Kermadec then ran on resolutely, proving a bit too strong to score nicely by a half neck. He looks suited to further still and is a very promising colt.
Stratum Star was a handy fifth but trapped three deep without cover. He moved up (still wide) coming to the turn, took the lead at the 400m and fought back in good style for (long neck) second after a testing trip.
Manhattan Avenue travelled well in fourth place on the rails, was under riding from the 300m and kept battling on, just
lasting for third in front of Hi World (fourth) who made ground from tenth at the 800m.The favourite, the filly Azkadellia was always well back, was angled into clear running at the 300m but then finished
only fairly for (6.6 lengths) tenth.
