Lille striker David unlikely to move in January

Lille's president, Olivier Letang, has firmly ruled out the sale of striker Jonathan David in the upcoming January transfer window.

The Canadian international is in the final six months of his contract, and several Premier League clubs, including Newcastle United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Arsenal, are monitoring his situation.

Newcastle United, who are eager to strengthen their forward options, have been closely linked with David.

The Magpies currently have only two senior strikers, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, with the latter yet to feature this season due to a persistent back injury.

While Newcastle signed Will Osula from Sheffield United in August, the young striker has seen limited action.

Manager Eddie Howe has been forced to use Anthony Gordon as a makeshift striker in Isak's absence, highlighting the club's need for reinforcements.

Chelsea and Aston Villa were both interested in David during the summer, but the striker remained at Lille.

Letang has expressed hope that David will agree to extend his stay in France, despite the growing speculation surrounding his future.

"Jonathan's situation is very simple," Letang told RMC Sport.

"We are very happy to have him with us. Last off-season, he had one year left on his contract. We could have qualified for the Champions League.

"When you have a guy who scores 20-25 goals per season, we weren't hung up on selling him. We didn't have any offers. Our position is very clear. We thought about the athlete.

"Jonathan, obviously, already has an offer to extend his contract. The ball is in his court. He will return from international duty tomorrow. We have had a lot of discussions about him staying with us. He won't leave in January.

"He will stay with us because he is an important player. He will stay because we have goals in May. When you have a player who scores 20-25 goals, qualifying for the Champions League at the end of the season balances out a transfer that didn't happen."
