McIlroy hunts Wells Fargo in familiar territory

Rory McIlroy will expect to do well in the Wells Fargo Championship this week, with the PGA Tour Signature event taking place at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.

The Northern Irishman has won three times on this course before and owns the course record (61).

His last win came in 2021 when he shot a –10, and forecasted poor weather means a that might not be far off the winning score this time around.

McIlroy, fresh off his triumph in the Zurich Classic with Shane Lowry, is favourite (8/1) in the absence of Scottie Scheffler, who is expecting his first child.

Xander Schauffele is also heavily tipped (9/1), while defending champion Wyndham Clark is priced anywhere from 12/1 to 18/1.

Clark has had some solid results this season with T3 at RBC Heritage and T2 at The Players along with the win at AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The US Open Champion will be looking to become the first player ever to defend the Wells Fargo title and should at least be lurking around the Top 10 (13/8).

Putting will likely decide the winner at Quail Hollow Club, and heading into the tournament Peter Malnati (300/1) is the clear leader for Shots Gained Putting of those in attendance, ranked second in 2024.

He picked up only his second PGA Tour win in March this year at the Valspar Championship, so a push for a top 20 finish (13/2) could be on the cards.

Getting to the green is no easy feet in North Carlolina, with the fairways narrow and punishing. Alex Noren (50/1) has the best Greens in Regulation Percentage of the Wells Fargo field with 73.02%, leading from Corey Conners (60/1) who has 72.09%.

Both will push for a Top 20 or better finish if they can replicate those stats on Quail Hollow Club's punishing holes. They are 6/4 and 17/10 to do so.
