ZIPPING CLASSIC - G2 2400m

While seen as somewhat of a consolation prize, the Zipping (Sandown) Classic does offer excellent prize money. At G2 level, it caters for many horses just below the Melbourne Cup, although some do back up. Zipping did an amazing job winning FOUR straight runnings. Take a look at the last few Classic winners.

PROFILING THE RACE

o The old Sandown classic is a very good race for the favoured runners.

o Run at Caulfield in 2013.

o While some have come from wide barriers, it never hurts to draw inside in a staying race.

o Winners haven’t had to be dour stayers to win this. 2000m horses have been able to get a cushy run and win this.

o Only 5 of the last 10 winners have run in the Melbourne Cup.

o Last 10 Winners Most Prevalent Age of winner - 6yo (4 times)

o Last 10 Winners Average Price of winner - $4

o Breakdown of winners - 7 geldings & 3 entires

o Races that the winner ran in prior - Melbourne Cup (5), Cox Plate (1), Queen Elizabeth Stks (3), Werribee Cup (1)

RECENT WINNERS

2014 - AU REVOIR 4h (Singspiel x First) ($4.50)

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy, Trainer: Andre Fabre

Barrier: 7, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 2:32.06

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 8

2nd: Epingle (57.0kg), 3rd: Prince Of Penzance (59.0kg)

Review: Yet another staying race over the carnival went to an international horse and while this one was not exactly having much hands on treatment by Andre Fabre, just the fact it was in his name gave it some credence.

He’d brought in very solid form from France in the Prix Foy, the MV Cup run was more than adequate as was the effort in the Melbourne Cup. In a funny run race he went forward with others expected to lead but they missed the jump.

He kept on kicking and held off the mare up the inside. It was a big day for OTI Racing.

Sertorius won in 2013 at Caulfield Picture: Racing and Sports
2013 - SERTORIUS 6g (Galileo x Pretty Penny) ($3.75)

Jockey: Ryan Maloney, Trainer: Jamie Edwards & Bruce Elkington

Barrier: 1, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 2:30.97

Margin: 2L, Track: Dead (4), Starters: 10

2nd: Epingle (57.0kg), 3rd: Queenstown (56.0kg)

Review: With the races moved to Caulfield as Sandown was being re-turfed, it took something away from the day but the Zipping Classic was a good contest.

Strangely a year run without a Lloyd Williams runner in it, they ran along over the 2400m. The mares set the speed and by the 600m, Queenstown had them all off the bit.

Precedence couldn’t back up his QEII effort but the one he conquered, Sertorius, fought like a tiger and surged up the fence to hold off all the mares.

2012 - TANBY 6g (Galileo x Dane Beltar) ($7.50)

Jockey: Nick Hall, Trainer: Robert Hickmott

Barrier: 7, Weight: 59.0kg, Gross Time: 2:32.01

Margin: 0.8L, Track: Good, Starters: 9

2nd: Exceptionally (57.0kg), 3rd: Precedence (59.0kg)

Review: The stable are desperate to win this race almost every year but more so after it was changed in name after their warrior Zipping.

But it was expected Mourayan would do it for them as 7-4 fav. Dame Claire led and Mourayan sat outside. Tanby was happy to be beyond midfield in the style Nick Hall enjoys.

He used the long run home and a turn of foot to put a length on the rest. Hall went up before the line but realised he had to keep on with the job.
