F1 champion Lewis Hamilton wins BBC award

Lewis Hamilton has beaten top-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy to be named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

Lewis Hamilton has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year after winning his second Formula One title.

The 29-year-old Mercedes driver beat top-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy, who won two major titles in 2014, to the prestigious award - which is voted for by the public.

When Hamilton won his first F1 title in 2008, he was second to Chris Hoy in the BBC poll.

Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo succeeded Sebastian Vettel as the overseas award winner after becoming soccer's world player of the year and helping Real Madrid win the European Champions League.
