Hastings trainer Patrick Campbell has been delighted with the progress the Savabeel filly has made and in a perfect world she will go for a break as a black type winner.

“We’re looking to run her over 1600 metres at Riccarton on April 16,” he said, referring to the Listed NZB Insurance Stakes.

Goodsav’s performance and immediate progress could also see the three-year-old back up a week later over 2000 metres in the Listed NZB Warstep Stakes.

“All going well on the first day, we would be keen to run her again and then she’d go for a spell,” Campbell said.

“She’s quite big and gangly and she’ll thicken out some more and grow into her frame - she looks like she’s going to be a pretty tidy four-year-old.”

Gooodsav has won two of her seven starts and last time out she pleased Campbell at Trentham with her effort to finish runner-up to Rasa Lila in the Gr.3 Cuddle Stakes at set weights and penalties.

“She wasn’t that well off and if it had been a handicap she would have been getting a lot more weight, but she ran very well and the winner’s a very good mare,” he said.

Meanwhile, Campbell hasn’t had to wait long for a return with Hunta Pence.

The No Excuse Needed three-year-old was a private purchase earlier this year and in his third start for part-owner Campbell he was successful at the recent Waipukurau meeting.

“Potentially he’s a very smart horse, but he’s been very, very green,” he said. ”He just needs a bit more ring craft.”
