Briefs for 28th January 2015

Unkindest cut of all; Pace makes race for Survived; Group One target for Suffire.

Unkindest cut of all

Promising two-year-old The Justice League is to go under the knife.

“We’re going to have to geld him and then give him a couple of weeks off,” trainer Nigel Tiley said.

“We’ll decide after that whether he has another preparation and we wait and get him ready for the spring.”

The Justice league was an impressive debut winner before he finished unplaced in the Listed Karaka Million.

“He didn’t get away from the draw and he did a few things wrong and got a bit lost,” Tiley said.

Pace makes race for Survived

A strong tempo is the key to Group One winner Survived finding his best form again.

“He’ll run in the 2000 metre race at Te Rapa this Saturday and he needs the pace on,” trainer Kelly Burne said.

“He’s a bit of an enigma really – physically I can’t fault him and he’s happy and eating and I think it’s a bit of a mental issue with him.”

Winner of the 2013 Makfi Challenge Stakes, Survived has been unplaced in his four most recent appearances.

Group One target for Suffire

Promising three-year-old Suffire will make her next appearance at Tauranga before she takes on the best of the fillies.

Two runs back she finished second behind the highly-regarded McQueen and then went one better at Tauranga, where she will be back in action next week.

Trainers Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott have then pencilled in a start in the Gr.3 Lowland Stakes as a lead in to the Gr.1 Wellfield New Zealand Oaks.
