At odds of 72-1, Bourboni (3 c Bernardini - Dancing Afleet by Afleet Alex) caused an upset when taking out Sunday’s Wood Memorial Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Aqueduct.

The Todd Pletcher-trained colt, who is raced by his breeder Calumet Farm, came from last in the field of nine runners and scored a head victory over Dynamic One (Union Rags), to become the 80th stakes winner for his sire Bernardini (A P Indy). Crowded Trade (More Than Ready) was another length and a quarter back in third.

Bourboni has now won three times in six career starts and is one of three winners out of Grade 2 winning mare Dancing Afleet (Afleet Alex) who has also produced the Grade 2 placed gelding Avant Garde (Tonalist).

"This is something they've done in the past," Pletcher said to Bloodhorse in crediting the ownership group for wanting to run Bourbonic in the race. "They are never afraid to take a shot.”

Bourboni is now seventh on the Kentucky Derby Leaderboard with 100 points.

Bearnadini shuttled to Australia for eight seasons between 2008 and 2015 and his 2021 fee at their Jonabell Farm in Kentucky is advertised at US$35,000.
