Satin And Silk was not able to emulate Satin Slipper and win the Gimcrack Stakes on debut, but she will get the chance to go one better than her older half-sister at Randwick this Saturday.

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained two-year-old resumes in the $160,000 Listed Lonhro Plate (1000m).

Satin Slipper finished a narrow runner-up to Sandbar in the 2018 Lonhro Plate at what was her first start since winning the Gimcrack.

Satin Slipper and Satin And Silk are the first and most recent named foals from one of the star fillies of her generation, Satin Shoes.

A daughter of Flying Spur who was trained by Clarry Conners, Satin Shoes won her first three starts, including the Listed Widden Sakes and Group 2 Silver Slipper Stakes, and finished second in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes before a midfield effort in the Golden Slipper won by Sepoy.

She won the Listed Quezette Stakes and finished third in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes as a spring three-year-old and although she won just one more race – the Listed Ortensia Stakes in the autumn of her four-year-old season – she finished runner-up in four other Group 2 events.

There was therefore much anticipation around what she might do in the breeding barn.

Satin Slipper, who is by Pierro, got things off to the perfect start with her Gimcrack win, before the Lonhro Plate second placing, but she then beat home just five rivals in four subsequent starts before being retired to stud.

Second foal Satin Socks (Medaglia d'Oro) also made her debut in the Gimcrack, finishing sixth, and went on to win three times before the breeding barn beckoned.

After Satin Socks, Satin Shoes had a filly by Written Tycoon that died after birth, while she then produced Satin Ribbons, a Capitalist filly who won three of six starts in Australia before being exported to the UK last August.

Satin And Silk is Satin Shoes' second attempt at reproducing with I Am Invincible, having missed to the champion stallion in 2018, and she finished fifth as an $8.50 chance in the Gimcrack won by Perfect Proposal.

Preparations for her return have included a couple of trials and although beaten in both, she did not finish further than three-quarters-of-a-length away from the winner in either and is a $5.50 chance in TAB's Lonhro Plate market.

Sam Clipperton will ride in the Lonhro Plate, in which Satin And Silk has the outside gate in a field that is down to seven after a couple of early scratchings.

Satin Shoes continued her impeccable record of producing daughters for owner Belinda Bateman when she had a filly by Zoustar in 2021, the same year she had another unsuccessful meeting with I Am Invincible and last year she returned to Written Tycoon.
