Deep Field Inglis graduate breaks maiden in Hong Kong
Newgate Farm’s Deep Field (Northern Meteor) looks to have another smart prospect in Hong Kong in the shape of the Jimmy Ting-trained My Sugar (4 g ex Kerimba by Sinndar) who chalked up his first career victory on his fourth start when he scored over 1400 metres at Sha Tin on Sunday.
Last seen finishing second over 1200 metres on November 1, the gelding clearly enjoyed the step up in trip, surging clear to beat Casimiro (Casamento) by an impressive four lengths, while Cheerful Days (Smart Missile) was another length and a half away in third.
Purchased for $26,000 at the 2018 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale from the Vinery Stud draft, the Kia Ora Stud-bred gelding becomes the fifth winner out of unraced Sindaar (Grand Lodge) mare Kerimba, whose progeny is headed by Listed winner Cathay Lady (Exceed And Excel).
Kerimba is also the grandam of New Zealand Listed scorer Cutadeel (Dundeel).
The gelding’s second dam is Group 3 scorer Kerita (Formidable) - the dam of Group winner Keraka (Storm Bird), who in turn produced Listed winner Kermiyana (Green Desert).
Further afield this is the same family as Group 3 winner Keratiya (Iron Mask) and stakes winners Rocky Ground (Acclamation), Karasiyra (Alhaarth) and Kerasona (Oasis Dream).
In 2019 Kerimba produced a colt by Mongumber Park Stud-based Safeguard (Exceed And Excel) and after missing to that same stallion in 2020, he was covered again by the son of Exceed And Excel (Danehill) this breeding season.
Deep Field has had seven winners in Hong Kong from just 15 starters and four winners so far this season, with this progeny in the jurisdiction headlined by unbeaten gelding Winning Dreamer.
The son of Northern Meteor (Encosta De Lago) has 54 lots catalogued at next year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, which gets underway on January 12.
