The New Zealand-bred Furore (6 g Pierro - Stormy Choice by Redoute's Choice) broke a long losing streak when he landed the Sa Sa Ladies’ Purse (Gr 3, 1800m) at Sha Tin on Sunday.

The Tony Cruz-trained gelding had not won a race since his victory in the Hong Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) on March 17 2019, but he flew up the outside to land the Group 3 in fine style, beating his stablemate Exultant (Teofilo) by a length and a quarter, while Australian-bred Dances With Dragon (Savabeel) was another neck back in third.

“When he ran in the mile race (Oriental Watch Sha Tin Trophy) it was too short for him,” Cruz said. “I find he has no (early) speed and I thought Joao (Moreira) would just stay quiet because with a patient race he’s sure to come home with you and he came home pretty good – he had a light weight too.”

Purchased by Australian Bloodstock and Kris Lees Racing for NZ$210,000 at the 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka National Yearling Sale from the Haunui Farm draft, the son of Pierro (Lonhro) kicked off his career in Australia for those connections for whom he won four times and also finished third behind D’Argento (So You Think) in the 2018 Rosehill Guineas (Gr 1, 2000m).

The gelding is out of unplaced Redoute’s Choice (Danehill) mare Stormy Choice, meaning he is bred on the same successful cross as eight other stakes winners, including Group 1 winners Arcadia Queen, Regal Power and Levendi.

Furore is a half-brother to Blizzard (Starcraft), who landed the nine races including the 2017 edition of the Chinese Club Challenge Cup (Gr 3, 1400m).

Stormy Choice herself is a half-sister to 2004 Brisbane Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Danestorm (Danehill) and the dam of Group 3 winner Shanzero (Danzero) and stakes winner What’s The Mail (Flying Spur).

Pierro is standing at Coolmore Stud for a fee of $137,500 (inc GST). Furore is the stallions only stakes winner in Hong Kong to date, whilst Pierro has a strike rate of 76 per cent winners to runs in the region
