RANDWICK April 20

TRACK RATING: Soft 5; RAIL: Out 7m 1000m to WP; 5m WP to 1000m. No advantage on rail. Strong southerly wind will suit horses on pace with cover.

Best Bets

RACE 4 (1) TANNHAUSER: Imposing Dundeel colt has got stronger in each of his three runs this campaign with his last start second on  a heavy track in the G3 Carbine Club over 1600m a fine prep for the step up to this distance. He covered ground and made up impressive ground over the last 200m to be beaten less than a length, indicating this is the race he has been set for at the carnival. He's performed well on affected ground and being a G1 placegetter is suited by the set weight conditions.

RACE 5 (7) FRONT PAGE: Almost stole the G1 Galaxy first-up over 1100m at Rosehill and is sure to strip a fitter horse for his return to Randwick where he is unbeaten in two starts. All his seven wins have been over 1200m including four on soft and heavy tracks and feature a brilliant win in sizzling time over course in the spring when he claimed his second successive Kosciuszko. Maps to fly solo in the lead and will take running down receiving up to 4kg from his main rivals.

RACE 8 (10) SUNSHINE IN PARIS: Classy mare loomed to win the G1 TJ Smith over 1200m two weeks ago before finishing a close fifth, peaking on her run in the heavy going after covering ground. That followed her terrific first-up second in the G1 Galaxy (1100m) when she was resuming off a long spell and you can expect her to strip a lot fitter for her return to the course and distance where she won the G1 Surround Stakes last season. Drawn to get a favourable run this time with cover behind the pace.

Why They Can Win….

RACE 1: (6) SILVANITO - Plenty to like about his first-up placing under big weight. Conditions will suit.

RACE 2: (11) OCCHIATA - Hard to fault her country progress. Stable knows when to target Highway class.

RACE 3: (3) INHIBITIONS - Classy win at Caulfield. Proven at Group level and rates to win with her 4kg drop in weight.

RACE 6: (13) HEZASHOCKA - Improved second up when rising to this trip. Drops to the limit and chances enhanced by rain.

RACE 7: (7) MANAAL - Left them without excuses in the Sires' Produce when she relished 1400m. Has the best form.

RACE 9: (9) WATERFORD - Ready to run fresh off solid trials. Out of a place only once in five first-up attempts.

RACE 10: (17) GENERAL SALUTE - Fitter for his strong return in black type company. Suited this class with ample speed to give him last crack.

TRIAL POINTERS

WARWICK FARM April 12: A big set where the longer 1207m heats stirred the most interest as they featured a G1 winner, interesting imports and some rising talents. Australian Guineas winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON trialled for the second time in Sydney since his Flemington win and never came off the bit to finish an easy third in the quickest of the three 1207m heats (72.34; 35.64). He bypassed the heavy track in the Doncaster and can still make an impact on the Sydney carnival on the final day. COSMIC VEGA and NEW ENERGY are imports to keep tabs on as they progress into their campaigns after pleasing efforts in their 1207m trials. The promising CITY OF LIGHTS also took the eye working home easily for an impressive fourth in her heat (73.43; 35.59). The G1 star PRIVATE EYE was back on his game beating an inferior lot in his 822m heat (48.41; 33.31), an effort that gave the clear impression he wants to get back to racing over distances that suit him better than recent short sprints. Kermadec filly SCARLET OAK lands in the top stable off an impressive debut win in NZ in March with this trial showing she has the obvious talent to go on with it. Her time wasn't quick (49.26; 34.73) but she did it easily to win her 816m heat with plenty in reserve.

WARWICK FARM MARCH 26: Australian Guineas winner SOUTHPORT TYCOON had an easy time in his first Sydney trial, working home under a big hold for a soft second in his 1200m heat (72.86; 34.91). The Guineas form is outstanding.

ROSEHILL March 18: A smart win by talented Zoustar mare KAZOU in her first trial since November. Cleared out from the start under no pressure to open a big lead and coast home by almost nine lengths in the fastest heat over 900m (53.73; 34.25), being the only winner to go under 54 seconds. Seems a formality for her to add to her record of four wins from only eight starts. Group One star OVERPASS won a strong 900m heat in good time (54.34; 34.17) in a trial that will bring him on nicely in fitness for his pending return to Perth. With first use of the track in the first heat he made his own pace.
