Trainer Sonny Yeoh came to Kranji with only two runners, booked jockey Ivaldo Santana on both, and went home with a perfect score after both Magical Talent and Dynamic Venture saluted on Friday night.

After Magical Talent stretched his unbeaten run to three wins two races earlier, it was the turn of Yeoh’s second runner, Dynamic Venture, a last-start winner in weaker company, to reward his trainer with a gutsy win in the $55,000 Class 4 Division 1 race over 1400m, two events later.

Drawn off the track in the outermost alley, Dynamic Venture was not given much of a chance ($74) by most pundits to make it two wins in a row. That belief was given further credence when Santana was seen not letting up on his efforts to get the son of Get Square to the lead in the first 400m.

While pouring the pressure on the leaders, Dynamic Venture was trapped three deep before finally getting his head in front, but still on the outside of Tim (Barend Vorster), with hot favourite ($8) California Eagle (Joao Moreira) not far behind, after recovering from a tardy getaway.

Turning for home, Dynamic Venture was still in full flight, but Tim was menacingly clawing his way back on the inside while California Eagle was also hitting top gear a few lengths astern. While many expected Dynamic Venture would feel the pinch after his early end-to-end exertions, he surprised all and sundry by finding a second wind to hold off an equally combative Tim by three parts of a length with California Eagle third another half-a-length away. The winning time was a slick 58.63secs.

Yeoh said the second win was a welcomed bonus as he had pinned his hopes of not returning empty-handed mainly on Magical Talent.

“That was an unexpected win. Doc owns that horse. I’m sure he’ll be happy,” said Yeoh who was referring to his elder brother Dr Yeoh Kheng Chye, whom he was a long-serving assistant-trainer to before he took over last September.

“It’s also two from two tonight. That’s nice. I think it’s my first.

“I thought it would be harder for him (Dynamic Venture) tonight, but he was up in class and as a result, he had less weight on his back.

“I told Santana he had to try and lead from his wide draw at all costs. Even though they had to work hard to get there, I could see the horse was travelling nicely on the bit.

“The rider had obviously saved a little bit for the last 100m.”

Moreira, who was aiming for a four-timer aboard California Eagle, having scored a hat-trick earlier with Dragonfly, Eclair Sensation and Zac Warrior, put the defeat of the David Kok-trained colt squarely down on his antics in the pens.

“He was unruly in the gates. He was actually digging a hole in there!” said the runaway leader on the Singapore jockey’s premiership.

“He was slow out of the gates and that cost him the race, no doubt. He got beaten by 1 ¼ lengths by the winner and he definitely lost that much at the start.

“Still, it was a good run as he was making ground on the winner in the last bit. He'll bounce back.”
