Newcastle's attempt to sign Antonio Silva faces setback

Newcastle United's pursuit of young Portuguese defender Antonio Silva hit a stumbling block in the summer, as Benfica rejected a substantial bid for the 21-year-old.

The Magpies offered £41 million in total, with an additional €15 million in add-ons, but the bid was swiftly turned down.

The club had identified Silva as a potential successor to Fabian Schar, with a young centre-back being their primary target for the window.

While Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace was their main focus, Newcastle also kept a close eye on Silva's situation.

Despite their interest, the young defender remained with Benfica, and Newcastle shifted their focus to other transfer targets.

However, Silva could yet return to Newcastle's radar, as Benfica has ruled out any potential move in January. The club may be open to selling him in the summer, with Juventus also reportedly in the race for his signature.

Looking ahead to the January window, Newcastle's priority will be strengthening their attacking options, although they will still need to address defensive reinforcements in the near future.

The club's ability to secure top targets will also hinge on their success in qualifying for European competitions.

A spot in the Champions League would provide a significant boost in attracting high-profile signings.
