Von Tunzelman wins 2018 Mills Reef Trentham Stakes Group 3 NZ$70,000 at Trentham (NZ), 2100m.
Appreciating the step up in distance, Von Tunzelman proved too strong in the closing stages to take his record to six wins (second black type) in 18 starts. Seven runners opted to go forward early allowing Leith Innes aboard the winner to settle one out in behind the leading group.
They remained midfield down the back and past the 800m before easing wider and ready to challenge. Into the straight out in the middle of the track they still had a couple of lengths to make up at the 200m then lengthened stride to level up to the lead and pulled out a little extra at the line to score narrowly but well.
Favourite Devise had the perfect run to the home straight, looked the winner at the 200m but could not hold out the winner for a close second.
Benzini was well back at the top of the straight, waited for the rails run and finished on well for third from Aspen Lass who had every chance at the 200m but wilted slightly for fourth.
