Washington Heights wins 2017 Shannon Stakes Group 2 $200,000 at Rosehill (NSW), 1500m.
Former Hong Kong-trained gelding Washington Heights is now the winner of three of his four starts since returning to the Gerald Ryan stable. He settled second last place in the nine-horse field, behind a solid tempo, before going deep on turning for home. He then showed a good turn of foot, hit the front at the 100m and then went on to score impressively.
Mighty Lucky was slowly away but recovered from his inside barrier (1) to settle in sixth place on the rails. He improved between runners nearing the home turn, got through to be in a challenging position at the 200m and then battled gamely for a good second in a smart second up performance.
Imposing Lass soon went to the front, was headed on passing the 200m and then held on nicely for third after setting a solid pace.
Lubiton raced behind the leader and held on for (3.7 lengths) fourth while the favourite Dawn Wall was seventh (one off the rails), improved nicely nearing the home turn but disappointed in the straight to finish (4.7 lengths) fifth.
