Savanna Amour wins 2017 Cockram Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Caulfield (VIC), 1200m.
Savanna Amour began well from barrier four to be a handy third early, one off the rail. Under Ben Melham, she lost a couple of places at the 600m to be fifth approaching the last corner then was shuffled back to midfield turning in. Melham had to switch to the inner for a run and when she saw daylight at the 150m she responded well, raced between runners to co-lead at the 50m then held on gamely to win narrowly, her fifth (third stakes) in eleven starts.
Flying Jess was equal last and four wide at the 500m, pulled widest into the straight and ran on very well to the line, failing narrowly to overhaul the winner from Written Era, who was last turning in and also ran on strongly for third - the first three were virtually in line at the post.
I Am Zelady got a lovely rails run turning in and had the lead at the 100m but was out-finished, a length further back in fourth.
