Jessy Belle wins 2016 Matriarch Stakes Group 2 $300,000 at Flemington (VIC) 4yo+Mares, 2000m.
Jessy Belle, a $26 chance caused a surprise in winning here, her first win in 19 starts since winning at this track in July last year. She was ridden quietly by Craig Williams and settled back in second last place in the 15-horse field before improving between runners at the home turn. She switched deep at the 300m and then came with a strong finish to grab a late-finishing win, her first over 2000m.
Sort After settled outside the leader (Rocket Commander) travelling at a reasonable tempo (first 1400m 1:29.71). She dashed to the front at the 300m and looked the winner only to be overtaken nearing the post for a second after running a bold race.
Happy Hannah was eased from her outside barrier (15) raced in last place until taken widest of all at the 400m. She then came with a late run for a close-up third, her wide barrier proving costly.
The favourite Lady Le Fay was third on the rails and was close enough at the 200m but just battled in the sprint home over the closing stages to finish (2.8 lengths) sixth.
