I Am A Star wins 2016 Myer Classic Group 1 $500,000 at Flemington (VIC) 3yo+Fillies & Mares, 1600m.
In a finish where the first nine horses were only a length and a half apart, the three-year-old filly I Am A Star scored a game victory, proving too good for her older opposition with her 49kg. She crossed quickly from barrier ten to race in second place before moving up nearing the home turn. She got the better of the leader (Whispering Brook) nearing the 200m and then fought back strongly for a very good win, running the 1600m out well.
French Emotion was seventh on the rails, got a split to be in a challenging position at the 100m and then battled strongly for a good second.
Denmagic was sixth, between runners, put in a good run from the 200m and finished well for a close-up third.
Dixie Blossoms raced in tenth place, switched into clear running at the 300m and then kept running on well to finish fourth, beaten less than a length.
The outsider Pure Pride was back in last place in the 15-horse field and caught the eye running on late for (0.9 lengths) fifth, Zanbagh fought well for a good (1.1 lengths) sixth, Pearls was handy all the way and held on for (1.2 lengths) seventh, First Seal was nicely placed on the rails all the way and battled on for (1.3 lengths) eighth under her 57kg while the favourite Don't Doubt Mamma was well back to the home turn and made some ground, without threatening, for (4.7 lengths) 12th.
