Cellarman wins 2016 Wintergarden Stakes Listed $100,000 at Eagle Farm (QLD) 2yo, 1400m.
After showing promise in three prior starts, the Chris Wallertrained colt Cellarman broke through in most promising fashion for his first win, racing in Listed class here. He was smartly away from his good barrier (3) before settling well in seventh place on the rails. Hugh Bowman angled for a split at the 200m, got into the clear shortly afterwards and finished too well to score a very good win in a close finish. He looks suited to further still and to have a bright future.
Brulee was back in tenth place, got between runners approaching the home turn, got along the inner from the 200m and she then fought well for a good second.
Endless Days was near last in the 15-horse field, saved ground between runners at the home turn and kept running on well for a close-up third.
The favourite Charnley River was a handy fourth, went through to take a narrow lead at the 300m and kept battling well for fourth, beaten less than a length.
Irish Sea was handily placed in third spot, but without cover. She challenged gamely at the 200m and then held on well for fifth, also less than a length from the winner.
