Mahuta wins 2015 Sandown Guineas Group 2 $250,000 at Sandown-Hillside (VIC) 3yo, 1600m.
Mahuta won a 3YO Maiden (1450m) at Kyneton on 8 October at his third race start when racing in blinkers for the first time and is now unbeaten in three runs since, capping that rapid progression with a Group Two victory here. He was smartly away from his wide barrier (12), settled in third place, one off the rails, dashed to the front at the 200m and fought back strongly to win impressively.
Dal Cielo raced in sixth place, three wide with cover, was asked for his effort at the 300m, got to second at the 100m and fought well to hold that position, finding the winner too strong.
Don't Doubt Mamma was back in tenth place (between runners), angled into clear running at the 300m and ran on really well for a very good third.
Ngarimu was fifth, between runners, put in a run at the 200m and battled well for a good (2.8 lengths) fourth, putting up a sound effort at only his third race start.
Flying Light raced outside the leader and held on nicely for (3.2 lengths) fifth while Godolphin’s Demonstrate led the field until the home turn before finishing (4.5 lengths) sixth.
