Vilanova finally broke through for his first win in Australia at his 13th start since coming from New Zealand as a promising two-year-old.

He settled last in the 12-horse field, following a strong tempo. He switched deep shortly after turning for home and came with a late bid to win, racing away by a length and a half, putting up a good effort.

Countersnip was seventh on the rails, was blocked on straightening and then eased across heels at the 200m before fighting on nicely for a sound second.

Alpha Beat was slowly away from his wide barrier (11) and settled near last. He made a quick run approaching the 600m and challenged wide out, rounding the home turn. He looked the winner when he took the lead at the 200m but then tired a little after his early efforts for a sound third.

Mysonharry came from near last on the rails and ran on quite well, being hindered slightly in the latter stages, for a good fourth. He then protested unsuccessfully against the third-placed Alpha Beat.

The favourite Bring Something ($4.25) enjoyed a good trip, fourth one out and one back and appeared to have every chance before dead-heating for fifth with Deliberate, beaten just under two and a half lengths.
