The Melbourne Mail is back for 2016, looking to pick up where we left off last season - with winners.
While most eyes are on the Gold Coast for the Magic Millions and the TopBetta Tournament for $50,000, which you can enter here - Click Here To Join - there is still a good card on at Caulfield with some interesting races to play.
As a side note, the Racing And Sports Team will all be having a bash at the big dollars on offer in the TopBetta Magic Millions Tournament so Click Here To Learn About Betting Tournaments , join up, and take us on.
Our bet of the day (or bank builder if we are playing TopBetta Tournaments!) at Caulfield comes in race 6 where Majestic Lass makes plenty of appeal.
The formbook will tell you that Majestic Lass backs up into the same class of race that she contested last week but in truth this looks a much easier assignment than the one that she tackled at Flemington.
Timeform Ratings quickly illustrate this. The average Timeform Rating of the 10 fillies than ran last week was 84.9. Of the 10 fillies we have seen in this weeks race that average is at 69.4.
A sharp drop indeed. Majestic Lass is the highest rated filly in the field this week with a rating of 82 and she looks to have more upside than her chief rivals here as well. Those that were rounded up by Jacqui's Joy is a low pressure race on Boxing Day certainly look to have their limitations.
Jacqui's Joy did show a nice turn of foot there but rounding up Majestic Lass looks a much sterner test of her talents and we're jumping at the $3.80 about the top rater.
The each way play (or the horse to blast us to the top of the leaderboard at the death if we are playing TopBetta Tournaments) is Fast And Free in the last.
The handy Volcanic Ash will no doubt be popular on the back of his win last time, and he is racing as though he can peak getting out to the mile now, but his stablemate Fast And Free worked home nicely behind him last start and might be ready to peak as well.
He gets out to his ideal trip, the mile, and the last run was a sign that he was back on track after a pair of quiet runs back from a lengthy break.
The clock gave a fairly modest appraisal of the race last time and while the winner might improve on that he does look beatable and the odds lean us towards his stablemate.
