Chris Scholtz - Early Thoughts

R&S Contributing Editor Chris Scholtz takes a look at tomorrow’s Sydney racing.

SELECTIONS

Rosehill Race 1 - 5 Rotator

Promising filly is set for her first win after missing by just a nose when second to Splintex when resuming over this course and distance on June 1.

Has shown plenty in her three starts and looks destined to win good races. Should get all the favours this time from her inside gate.

Asterius is in top form Picture: Racing and Sports

Rosehill Race 3 - 4 Asterius

Could not have been more impressive beating up his rivals second up over 1500m at this course on June 1 when a big winner by more than three lengths.

It’s not ideal that he drops back in distance to 1300m but he’s come back in strong form this prep and will have no trouble with the class rise. Favoured on his home track where he has built a strong record.

Rosehill Race 6 - 7 High Bridge

Import found his form last start when he closed strongly to be narrowly beaten by Hush Writer over this course and distance in the McKell Cup on June 1 when he arguably should have won after he was checked on the turn.

Seems more focused since blinkers were applied and will get his chance to run the tables as he meets the winner 2kg better.

BLACKBOOK UPDATE from 8 June (Horses to follow at their next three starts)

Federal - Hard to miss his first-up finish.

Sweet Deal - Good mare. Will soon find her right race.

Connemara - Can only improve off pleasing return.

Bon Amis - Honest sprinter is a model of consistency.

Mongolian Wolf - Can pick up a winter staying race.

Rosehill (Sat) - Intrepidacious (R1), Slow Burn (R3), Charlayne (R4), Danawi (R4), Almanzora (R8), Tony Nicconi (R8) and Sylvia’s Mother (R8)

Sylvia’s Mother (Rosehill 7 June) - Classy prospect motored through her 894m trial in her first outing since she finished fifth in the G2 Light Fingers Stakes in February. She was coasting five lengths off the pace at the 400m then went up a gear to quickly round up the leaders with Tommy Berry in cruise control over the last 100m but still running the quickest closing sectional (55.41; 35.20). She’s black type quality.

Tony Nicconi (Randwick 31 May) - Lindsay Park has this classy 3YO in Sydney and his 745m heat win in the fastest time of the morning (43.00; 33.90) was a good pointer to him being competitive in whatever he contests first-up. Followed up with another strong trial win at Rosehill on June 7 over 894m, running quicker overall time than Sylvia’s Mother (55.20; 35.30).

Bathurst (Mon) - Martha’s Heights (R2)

Recent Trial Watch winners - Terminology; Funstar; Enforcement; Snips; Nostro Re; Savvy Ken; Deprive; Roman Wolf; Grey Lion; Aim For Perfection; Positive Peace; Exceedance; North; River Bird.

Chris’ final observations and full audio preview of all Sydney races will be available after 9.30am Saturday on the R&S website and tweeted by @ScholtzRacing.
