Topgear cruises to Challenge Stakes success

Christopher Head's Topgear ensured the lengthy trip to Newmarket was a worthwhile one when cruising clear of his rivals in the Group 2 Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Challenge Stakes.

After showing plenty of promise when under the care of Fabrice Chappet in his early years, Topgear has progressed nicely this season, especially since dropping back to seven furlongs.

A smooth Group 3 victory in the Prix du Pin at Longchamp last month set up a tilt at Thoroughbred Industry Employee Awards Challenge Stakes and with sustained market confidence behind the French-raider, he was sent off the 3/1 favourite under Stephane Pasquier.

After travelling strongly throughout, Topgear cruised to the front inside the final two furlongs and quickly put the race to bed in a matter of strides. Royal Scotsman attempted to make inroads into the leader against the near rail, but he was never able to get on terms with the eventual winner, who pulled away in the closing stages for an emphatic five-and-a-half length success.

Stuart Williams' ten-time winner Quinault stayed on well once headed to grab the bronze medal.

"I really love this horse, what a season for the stable and what a season for Wootton Bassett," said Head.

"Stephane said he is not blowing a candle, and he is a very nice horse. I am pleased to see his progress.

"It is incredible to train for the owner Mr Saito, he has been in the stable since the beginning of this year and I am so happy to win today for him. I hope there will be many, many other wins across Europe.

"He has always been full of speed and we overtried him over the mile. We are now sure he is better at this distance, so we will keep him at that, and we will now have a strong discussion about next season's programme.

"This horse could go anywhere, and it is going to be very interesting."
