Nickle Back dominates in front-running Scilly Isles display

Nickle Back produced an exceptional front-running display to win a first Grade 1 for jockey James Best and trainer Sarah Humphrey in the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase at Sandown on Saturday.

The result never appeared in question, with James Best pulling a near-twenty length lead ahead of the field down the back straight. Nickle Back continued to jump well in the closing stages and whilst Hermes Allen was beginning to rally before falling at the second last fence, it would have been difficult for any of Nickle Back's opponents to get on terms with the winner. Djelo stayed on well for second.

In a post-race interview with ITV, Best said: "I just cannot believe it. As a small child growing up, you watch these big races on the television on a Saturday and dream of being a jockey. I love the fact I'm a jockey, let alone winning races like this!

"I was gobsmacked I was on him at Warwick for the first run in his chasing career and for them (connections) to have all put their faith in me and this wonderful horse, it means so much and I can't believe it.

"He was a bit brave early on and that kind of twisted my arm the second time down the back to go with him. He loves jumping, I gave him a breather down the back and when we winged three out, I thought they'll either catch us or they won't and we'll stay galloping."

Paddy Power shortened Nickle Back from 33/1 to 14/1 for the Turners Novices' Chase at the Festival.
