Debut winner in line for Sydney trip

A promising member of Peter Lock’s stable could be high tailing it to Australia if the Te Aroha trainer gets the seal of approval from a champion jockey at Avondale on Wednesday.

Lock has engaged Matt Cameron to ride High Tail It in the Rating 65 Avondale Business Centre 1400 and the jockeys’ premiership winner’s assessment of the mare will determine her immediate future.

High Tail It was a stylish debut winner last month in the hands of apprentice Rowena Smyth, who has made way for experience.

“There’s a big group of owners and a few of them are in Australia and they’re keen to get her over there,” Lock said.

“Rowena did a perfect job the other day, but with thoughts of going to Australia we decided on a senior rider to see what he thinks of the mare.

“My daughter Casey and her partner Con Karakatsanis have got a really good set up at Warwick Farm and she could go there and race for $A85,000 every Saturday.”

A daughter of High Chaparral and a Grosvenor mare, High Tail It showed dash to win first-up over 1000 metres on her home track and she is expected to improve further over more ground.

“We used that as a barrier trial really and she only had to walk across the road,” Lock said.

“We’ve been patient with her and I don’t think she’ll handle firm ground as she hasn’t got the greatest front legs.

“She’s had a couple of preparations and had a trial as a three-year-old before she went shin sore. We’ve known for quite some time that she’s got a huge amount of ability.
