Rogerson Filly Turns On The Power

Exciting young sire Power made the perfect start to his stud career in New Zealand when his first Southern Hemisphere-bred runner won New Zealand’s first juvenile race of the season at Wanganui on Saturday.

The Graeme Rogerson-trained filly Gift Of Power (Power x Capital Diamond, by Lucky Unicorn) burned off her rivals to win by two lengths for her owner breeder4s Sir Patrick and Lady Hogan.

“She’s going to Cambridge Stud on Monday and Sir Patrick has got a paddock saved for her outside his bedroom window,” said Rogerson, who prepares the precocious filly with his wife Debbie.

The Hogans retained an interest in the filly after she was sold for $180,000 purchase from the Cambridge Stud draft at the NZB Premier Yearling Sale at Karaka in January where she was selected by Rogerson’s grand-daughter Bailey.

“She liked her and bought her – I thought she paid too much, but she’s cheap now,” Rogerson said.

“She’s a real professional who jumps and rails well and she’s only going to get better. She’ll run in the Wellesley Stakes next and then we’ll make a plan to get her to the Karaka Million.”

Power, a dual G1 winner by Oasis Dream, made a good start in Europe where he has already had 14 first crop winners including the G3 winner Peace Envoy. He had a double in the UK on Friday with winners at Ascot and Musselburgh both trained by William Haggas.

Gift Of Power is the first foal from the G1 NZ 1000 Guineas placed Capital Diamond, a grand-daughter of the celebrated G1 winner and producer Diamond Lover, a star member of the famed Eight Carat family.

• AN astute weanling purchase was rewarded with a valuable black type win at Wanganui on Saturday when Per Incanto filly Its Time For Magic claimed the Listed O’Leary’s Fillies’ Stakes (1200m).

At the end of an exciting duel, Its Time For Magic won by a half-head.

The winner is trained and part-owned by Robert Priscott.

Bred by the Little Avondale Trust, Its Time For Magic is by Per Incanto out of the Savabeel mare Tick Tock Time and ws purchased by Priscott at the 2014 NZB National Weanling, Broodmare & Mixed Bloodstock Sale for just $1200.
