ECB chief executive Richard Gould has insisted he would not be offering "the dreaded vote of confidence" to  England men's white-ball head coach Matthew Mott, but his role is still in doubt.

Mott's position has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks after disappointing title defences in the 50-over and T20 World Cups in the past nine months, with managing director of cricket Rob Key reviewing the set-up.

Both Mott and captain Jos Buttler are facing questions over their leadership, with reports swirling around possible successors.

Gould was invited to end the discussion on the opening day of England's third Test against the West Indies at Edgbaston but did nothing to allay the speculation.

After confirming it was "certainly not true" to say Mott had already been dismissed, he told BBC's Test Match Special: "We are always assessing options. That's what happens in high performance sport.

"You're always assessing your options but you never want to be drawn into giving the dreaded vote of confidence or anything like that.

"That's what competitive sport is, it always brings scrutiny and decisions. We always want to make sure we do the right thing by the sport, the team and the individuals."

"We'll always use whatever time we've got to make the best decisions possible; we won't be pressured into anything other than that."
