Historical Race Analysis - G1 The Galaxy 1100m

It has become the handicappers sprint G1 during the Autumn carnival as many of the bigger guns head to the WFA TJ Smith.

Some of them have gone to the All Aged Stks which attracts those same horses up to 1400 instead of the 1100m of this race.

Remember the old days of Schillaci, Gold Ace, Mr Tiz, Snippets, Bletchingly and the mighty Luskin Star. The first Rosehill Galaxy was a cracker. What happens in 2016?

PROFILING THE RACE

o Barriers haven’t meant much at all in recent years - cover then momentum has been more important. The new venue has made no change with wide draws no harm.

o Older Mares have an horrendous record with the mid 70s being the last winner. La Baraka was a filly in ’98 and Ortensia lost on swab. Sweet Idea was a 4yo.

o 3yos have gone very well winning a substantial number of recent runnings.

o Not many favourites recently - not necessarily wild roughies though except Proprietor.

o In 1992 the legendary Schillaci won the Lightning Stks, Oakleigh Plate, Newmarket Hcp and Galaxy in the one season.

o Last 10 Winners Most Prevalent Age of winner - 4/6yo (3 times)

o Last 10 Winners Average Weight of winner - 54.0kg

o Last 10 Winners Average Price of winner - $15

o Breakdown of winners - 6 geldings, 2 colts, 1 mare & 1 entire

o Races that the winner ran in prior - Challenge Stks (2), Star Kingdom Stks (2), Newmarket Hcp (2), Oakleigh Plate (1), Darby Munro (1), Spell (2)

RECENT WINNERS

2015 – SWEET IDEA 4m (Snitzel x Flidais) ($17)

Jockey: Blake Shinn, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse

Barrier: 11, Weight: 55.5kg, Gross Time: 1:02.69

Margin: 2.5L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 14

2nd: Kuro (52.0kg), 3rd: Miracles Of Life (55.5kg)

Review: It had been established that the owners had desired to have this bonny mare ready for races like the Stradbroke in their home state. Hence little credence was given to her hopes first up.

Much was made of the somewhat dubious chances of Rubick and Deep Field who had had their colours lowered recently. Well Deep Field just went too hard in front. He was gone early in the straight.

But Blake Shinn got his mare into her comfort zone, pulled her out wide and the last furlong was her best. She roared away and bolted in. Brisbane was still a while away but this had done the job finally getting that G1 on the mantelpiece after several placings.

2014 – TIGER TEES 6g (Dubawi x Parfore) ($13)

Jockey: Nash Rawiller, Trainer: Joe Pride

Barrier: 4, Weight: 55.0kg, Gross Time: 1:05.02

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Slow (7), Starters: 13

2nd: Anatina (52.0kg), 3rd: Villa Verde (53.0kg)

Review: This was a competitive version of the Galaxy but not a great one. So much so that a filly who hadn’t even run in a G2 race nearly won. The wet track caused some issues but worse was to occur when Bel Sprinter and then Rain Affair missed the start.

It allowed Kencella to lead but he didn’t go quickly enough. Tiger Tees was allowed to camp on them and Nash Rawiller only had to come around the first couple. He pounced but Anatina almost caught him.

With his breeding, a wet track was always going to help and Joe Pride got his wish with at least one of his horses.

Bel Sprinter came from nowhere to win

2013 – BEL SPRINTER 5g (Bel Esprit x Gavroche) ($10)

Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy, Trainer: Jason Warren

Barrier: 11, Weight: 53.5kg, Gross Time: 1:02.87

Margin: 3.5L, Track: Good, Starters: 13

2nd: Snitzerland (53.5kg), 3rd: Decision Time (55.0kg)

Review: What an extraordinary win. Many years ago we saw Belle Du Jour miss the kick and she won the Slipper. This horse missed by two, was second last on straightening and bolted in over a top field. In some ways, it was the best thing to happen to him.

He was clear of the ruck in a mad speed race and yet was within five lengths on the turn. McEvoy pulled him wide and Bel Sprinter went from 12th to 1st inside 100m.

The turn of foot was fantastic. Snitzerland was bolting then looking tied to the fence in a thrice. He was finally on the board in a big one.
