British General has led throughout for a determined win in the Listed Weekend Hussler Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
The Dan O'Sullivan gelding under the guidance of Luke Currie controlled the tempo throughout and while headed by Bello in the straight, fought back doggedly for a narrow success.
“He really deserved one, he was very brave last week where he did a lot of work into the wind,” O'Sullivan said.
Now a dual black type winner, British General will chase Group success later this spring with the Emirates Stakes on the agenda.
“This bloke now, I think this race today makes him exempt from the Emirates Stakes, so that's something we can pencil in and work towards now.”
Jockey Luke Currie has always maintained a strong association with British General throughout his career having partnered the General Nediym gelding at the races on 12 occasions for five successes.
It was Currie's first stakes level ride this season and his first black type win since taking out the Australia Stakes (1200m) with Sea Lord at Moonee Valley in January
“It was great for Luke who rides a lot for me without getting many accolades,” O'Sullivan said.
The Peter Snowden-trained Bello finished second with Floria in third.
Race favourite Richie's Vibe ran a closing fourth.
British General's Weekend Hussler Stakes (1400m) victory was his eighth in 21 starts.
With an additional six minor placings to his name the six-year-old has now amassed prizemoney earnings closing in on $400,000.
“He always fights on and I think the name [British General] is very suitable for him,” part owner Kathy Brown said.
