Dark Brown Sugar Sweet For Singleton

Hawkesbury trainer Scott Singleton notched a rare two-state metropolitan double after Dark Brown Sugar won the ATC Membership On Sale Handicap at Warwick Farm on Saturday.

Singleton saddled up Platinum Jack to win the first at Moonee Valley last night then continued to saddle up the winners with Pendragon mare, Dark Brown Sugar.

Dark Brown Sugar won her maiden at Randwick in the spring of 2011 but failed to break back through in City grade until Saturday.

Ridden by Hugh Bowman, Dark Brown Sugar jumped well from a decent draw and sat second in the run some four lengths off race leader Mickelberg.

As the field rounded the turn Bowman had gradually made up ground to sit within a length of the leader on straightening and from there it was a matter of something running Dark Brown Sugar down.

Segue made a late charge but never looked like reeling in Dark Brown Sugar who went on to score a comfortable victory.

At the line the margins were a length and a half to Segue with a further head to Arms Length in third place.

“I haven't ridden her before but it looked a decent race for her,” Bowman said. “I rode a winner for Scotty the other day and he got a winner at Moonee Valley last night, so the stable is in form.

“The mare got into a beautiful rhythm, I was pretty confident about the 300m, when she hit the front she started to think about it but she got the job done.

“I predicted (the leader) would do that, because of his draw and the way he went the other day, he won convincingly, so I thought if I could stay in touch without getting out of my comfort zone it would be my best chance of rolling him and it turned out that way.”
