Our King Sway wins 2017 Platinum Homes Taranaki Cup Group 3 NZ$80,000 at Pukekura Raceway (NZ), 1800m.
Finally rewarded, after a very consistent run of form, Our King Sway did not begin well (barrier 8) and settled equal last with a circuit to run. Around the far turn, apprentice jockey Anna Jones got the gelding to the fence but starting down the back straight they had last position all to themselves and lost touch with the field. At the 800m, they accelerated quickly to be midfield but widest and approaching the last corner ranged up to the leaders, ready to pounce. Although deepest, they grabbed the lead at the 250m and then ground away to the line keeping the field at bay by a long neck.
Top weight, Overtheriver, took over the lead at the 1000m, was collared by the winner at the 250m but kept on doggedly to the line, solid under his 60kg weight.
Cruiser was fifth, one out, at the 600m, tracked Overtheriver into the straight and had every chance yet was doing his best work late and not far away.
