Leading trainer Stephen Gray certainly had a weekend to remember clinching both features, the Group 2 EW Barker Trophy and Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup.

In what was Gray's maiden success in Singapore's premiere staying event, it was emerging four-year-old Lim's Cruiser who joined stablemate Born To Fly on the honour role of the EW Barker Trophy [1400m].

Only a fairly recent addition to the Gray stable, Lim's Cruiser had continued to impress and while beaten at the short odds ($1.40) two back, he proceeded to take a good step forward on Friday night.

Yet to miss the money in six attempts in Singapore, Lim's Cruiser clearly appreciated racing on the fresh side (35 days) and also sported blinkers for the first time.

While all eyes were fixed firmly on champion jockey Joao Moreira (aboard Alibi), it would be his Hong Kong counterpart Karis Teetan who would take the spoils.

Drawn well on the inside, Lim's Cruiser held his position in fifth with the Steven Burridge trained Jay Eff Express taking up the running from the wide draw.

Travelling well for Teetan passing the 700m, Lim's Cruiser clearly needed an out, though Teetan didn't panic.

Sticking to the inside, Lim's Cruiser began to work through his gears and enjoyed a lovely passage up the rail.

Squeezing his way past Jay Eff Express passing the 200m, Lim's Cruiser hit the front, drawing clear to score by just over a length.

Jay Eff Express stuck on well to finish second with the James Peters trained Magnum just edging out the Patrick Shaw trained Storm Troops to finish third.

Lim's Cruiser improved considerably on his previous best with the race tying in well with Nova Strike beaten just 2.5L.

Allotted 7kg more than Lim's Cruiser, Nova Strike's performance held plenty of merit and continued his good run of form for trainer Alvin Tan.

Still only lightly raced, Lim's Cruiser is expected to be spelled following Friday's success and creates plenty of interest for the upcoming season.

A winner of four of his nine starts, he has continued to raise the bar and if able to continue that progression, he can certainly make that transition to Group 1 company.

If not already in your blackbook, Lim's Cruiser is certainly worth an addition, along with Magnum.

He has a big race win in him, all he needs is a more favourable draw — from his last five starts he is yet to draw inside 10.

Bahana

On Sunday it would be another lightly raced type to take the prize for Gray with Bahana leading throughout to win the Group 1 Singapore Gold Cup [2200m].

In what was simply a master class from Australian jockey Craig Williams, Bahana proved too slick for his rivals posting his seventh win from 13 starts.

A narrow winner of the Group 3 El Dorado Classic [2200m], Bahana was facing a stern step up in grade, however he passed with flying colours.

After beginning well from the wide draw, Williams took the initiative to roll forward and take up the running.

Allowed to dictate terms, Williams simply pants his rivals.

Revved up passing the 800m, Bahana headed for home and while some may felt he went too early, in truth Williams had plenty of horse left underneath him.

In what turned out to be a walk and sprint home, Bahana reeled off last 600m marked 15L inside standard — his rivals had no chance!

The only galloper to make considerable ground was the Shane Baertschiger trained Blue Swede who came from well back to finish third.

A noteworthy performance given the first four around the turn finished 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th.

Much like Lim's Cruiser, Bahana creates plenty of interest moving forward as he too is only lightly raced.

His performance on Sunday saw him return a clear new career peak and now the question remains whether he can make the transition to WFA company.

A winner of five of his last six starts, Bahana is clearly a galloper heading in the right direction and possesses a similar profile to 2014 Singapore Gold Cup winner Quechua.

The latter has since made the transition to be one of Singapore's leading gallopers, can Bahana do the same? Early indications suggest he can.
