Pump Up The Volume wins 2016 Ricoh Feilding Gold Cup Listed NZ$50,000 at Awapuni (NZ), 2100m.
Top weight was not enough to stop Pump Up The Volume from scoring his second stakes win. Under apprentice Emily Farr, he jumped from barrier eight and settled down second last (rails) with a circuit to run. Farr saved ground around the far bend and down the back straight but they were still second last at the 800m. Approaching the last corner the pair got away from the fence and ran up to be handier but out widest once they headed for home. He took forever but gradually hauled himself up to the leaders and under a strong ride stuck his head out inside the 50m to score a hard fought win.
Alinko Prince was fourth (one out) passing the 800m, moved closer approaching the last corner then stuck on well for the length of the straight, narrowly outstayed by the winner.
Five To Midnight was three wide down the back and then shot forward to take over at the 600m. Looking likely at the 300m he held on well to go down narrowly in a three way finish.
