Singapore Racing - Weekend Review - Singapore Derby

Melbourne Cup winning jockey Michael Rodd has quickly made his presence felt in Singapore collecting his fourth Group 1 success over the weekend.

Although succumbing to injuries throughout the year it has not halted Rodd's impressive tally at the top level.

During his short time in Singapore Rodd has already collected four Group 1 victories, all from just nine attempts.

The champion jockey collected his first Group 1 success aboard Stepitup in last year's Group 1 Kranji Mile [1600m] before repeating the dose in the Raffle's Cup [1800m].

Good fortune would see Rodd land the plumb ride on rising star Debt Collector in the 3YO series after Vlad Duric chose to ride stablemate Fitzroy.

In four attempts aboard Debt Collector Rodd has collected three wins with his only failure coming when dislodged from the gelding at his third start.

An impressive winner of the Group 2 Singapore 3YO Classic [1400m], Debt Collector went on to prove a class above in the Group 1 Singapore Guineas [1600m] and is certainly a galloper heading in the right direction.

Good fortune would again see Rodd back in the winner's circle when handed the plumb ride aboard Well Done in the Sunday's Group 1 Singapore Derby [2000m].

Fellow ex-pat Glen Boss had ridden Well Done to victory in the Group 1 Patron's Bowl [1600m] but elected to ride the Laurie Laxon trained Mr Spielberg in the feature event.

Rodd had enjoyed success aboard Well Done prior to his maiden Group 1 victory and obviously jumped at the opportunity to ride the talented galloper.

Although some queried his ability to see out the 2000m, a patient and well-timed ride saw Well Done land the prestigious prize.

In what was an enthralling contest, the race chopped and changed a number of times in the straight before Well Done asserted his dominance late.

Ridden patiently from the inside draw, Rodd found the rail aboard Well Done and he relaxed beautifully towards the rear of the field.

Pinching runs along the inside Well Done travelled up nicely leading into the straight but needed an out.

Popped off the fence passing the 400m Well Done sliced his way through the field, easing to the outside passing the 300m.

Given full bore by Rodd, Well Done let down strongly displaying an impressive turn of foot to quickly wear down the Patrick Shaw trained Majestic Moments.

The latter looked to have the race won when hitting the front inside the 200m but Well Done proved the superior stayer drawing away late to score by three-quarters of a length.

The Mark Walker trained Rockfast stuck on well to finish third after he hit the front very early in the straight — in hindsight Manoel Nunes may have bided his time a little longer before letting loose aboard the again.

Once again the Patron's Bowl proved the superior formline in the Derby with Well Done and Majestic Moments filling the quinella.

Both gallopers improved marginally on their previous best though they were unable to reach the heights of previous victors Quechua, Spalato or Better Life.

Only relatively lightly raced (17 starts), Well Done has made remarkable improvement and creates plenty of interest moving forward.

Whether he can continue that upward spiral remains to be seen however Well Done is certainly heading the right way.

For trainer David Kok it was a very special moment, just his third success at the elite level.

“Winning the Kranji Mile was such a big day for me, then the Patron’s Bowl was even more special as unlike Cash Luck (previously with Michael Freedman), Well Done was my horse from Day 1, I’ve groomed him from an unraced to what he is now,” Kok said.

“But to win the Derby I would say that tops it especially as I have only around 20 horses in my stable. I can’t find the words.

“It’s clearly my biggest day as a trainer, I’ve had many sleepless nights before the race and tonight I won’t be able to sleep again it just hasn’t sunk in yet."
